    I asked this same question and Swift promptly answered:

    Cursed Souls are gained by trading your duplicate puzzle pieces in the trading window section of the puzzle.

    Your fellow pirate is correct.

    Like mentioned previously by Swift cursed souls can be obtained from selling your duplicate puzzle parts.

    As OP seems to be satisfied with answer provided I'll close this thread.
