Lost most of my Interest in Davie Jones Coffer

This morning I noticed that this 'event' was back (with no announcement). I checked how much interest I had and saw it was ~48k. Now this afternoon I checked again and it was only 8k. I did not cash in anything, so what happened?

Davy Jones Coffer is not an event but a payment sale.

Your interest that displayed (48 000) was the amount of the interest collected last time - that's the amount you ended up getting when this sale was run previously.

It has been restarted but for it to be displayed correctly you had to perform a log out / in - that's why it show 8 000 points of interest right now, as this is where you are currently "standing".

So, if I get back to 50k I can't open the coffer for a reward, it allows for something to be purchased? Was there a FAQ for this I missed?

Long story short -> You unlock certain amount of interest -> Purchase a special Key from payment -> Open chest to get rewards
