    Read the FAQ.

    Stay in your level range and it'll work fine.

    1-5
    6-15
    16-20

    go lower you'll only get gold.

    As stated by your fellow pirate, if you are shooting the shipwrecks in maps below your map level you will receive only small amounts of gold.
