I would like to know whats a good defense for shooting NPC's like gems and what not, I'm still learning the game.......just looking for some good advice

Damage prevention gems on pet and ship, ribs and dodge chance if you shoot admiral.

Both defences are required for most of the NPCs, however you will find out that during certain events some NPCs require a bit more dodge but other will be more into damage prevention.

Damage Prevention is considered better for PvE
Dodge Chance is considered better for PvP​

Personally on my NPC ship preset I am using 27 Reinforced Ribs which provide me with 22% Damage Prevention as well as lots of HP and VP.

On higher levels you should consider use of Ablative Plantings as that allow you to mix other expansions without loosing any points in damage prevention.

Ship: Both defensive gems +5% plates bonus as special
Pet: Dmg prev + hit prob or dmg prev. + dodge chance depending on the actual event​

Since you consider yourself "small" please don't forget about the importance of Extension items (do not mix them).

Each extension item have two values, Absolute and Relative.

Absolute values are when extensions that contains the same type of value are added together to give you a total.​

Relative values are calculated to at an average, meaning if a value is lower or not included on another equipped extension, the maximum value will be less. The value that is displayed in the overview shows the optimum value. This is the one that can be reached if you are either equipping only one extension, or extensions of the same type.​

Additionally, for this event (golem NPCs especially) dodge is the most important defence aspect, you can increase your dodge chance by using the Lion's Bulwark shields - but don't buy them from the shop it is better to throw mojos into the cauldron from where you can get free shields and other action items (including bonus maps on which you can send your captains to make some of these pearls back).

Here is an example reward of 100 000 pearls thrown into the cauldron (this will differ depending on your luck):

The outcome... it is pure profit:

44 pieces of Capricornus = 1 Bonus map 25 000 pearls worth
200+ Bulwarks = 90 000 pearls worth
Additional ammunition, Virgo bonus maps, gunpowder - this is your "pure profit"

Yes, for some NPCs it may be even greater than Damage Prevention.

Please be aware that each NPC is different, something that work for Golem may not work at all against Renown.

Hey Mate! You may want to buy some "super armor plates" (as well as "lions bulwarks", as Rymar mentioned). You may have to get higher up the ladder before you can buy the "super armor". I am not sure now. But both items are extra shields that help in PvP and in PvE. I have had NPCs that hit me hard; when I put these on, the damage often drops significantly! And the Commonwealth Guardian crew member can help you a lot with PvE damage.

I wanted to mention one more thing. The Commonwealth crew members are valuable to use. I usually use the Commonwealth Sellsword (the higher the level, the more cannons you can put on). You lose those cannons when you replace him with the Commonwealth Guardian, but when I am having great trouble with an NPC - and everything I try fails - I always try the Guardian. <--(And the higher the level, the better the odds). I hope that helps you!
