I just got a level 3 steel chains. I put it on (after removing 5 beams to make room) and it made no difference to the harpoon damage. None. I understand that it is 'relative' so I wasn't expecting a lot of change from just one, but there was no change at all. Is it working? Is there something else needed to make it work? Or is 1 really just not enough to make even 1 extra damage?

    Hello,

your chain is working correctly but because of beams amount its harpoon % decrease drastically.

In order to see a difference in your harpoon damage please decrease the amount of beams on your ship.

I would recommend creating a new ship preset for harpoon damage only.

Within the ship extension items we have two values: absolute and relative.

Absolute values are when extensions that contains the same type of value are added together to give you a total.

Relative values are calculated to at an average, meaning if a value is lower or not included on another equipped extension, the maximum value will be less. The value that is displayed in the overview shows the optimum value. This is the one that can be reached if you are either equipping only one extension, or extensions of the same type.

You can find more regarding the Ship Extensions and how each value is calculated within this thread ->

I get that since it is relative that it is getting diluted by having the rest of the slots filled with beams, but diluted shouldn't mean zero effect.

    Here is my math:
1500 (amount I hit with Steel harpoons) * 0.4 (the 40% extra damage from the chains) / 330 (the number of beams in the remaining slots) = 1.8

So, even if it truncates vs rounds up, I should see at least 1 more damage. Or is the 40% on the base 500 damage for the steel harpoons? In this case there would be 0.6 more damage?

If I put on the one chain and take off all of the beams, will I get the full 40% extra damage?

I already have a preset/ship setup for harpoons. I did that ages ago to allow me to use the harpoon castles only when I needed them. I agree that this is a great idea. ;)

    Ahoy mate,

I believe that is correct. Due to it being relative, it severely dilutes the benefits gained if you have beams on. If you want a good harpoon setup, I would recommend only using the Chain(s). It also does scale off the base damage.

Thanks to both of you for the additional info. I'll try just the chain and see what happens.
