I'm new to using this feature. The Seafight Bible states: "Manoeuvres can be replaced under specific circumstances: Empowering with "Manoeuvre Handbook": Using this catalyst item can replace the existing manoeuvre with a new random one."

How do we change the manoeuvre skill a captain currently has, and replace it with another skill? My question covers both random and non-random skill selections.

And to that point, where do we obtain these specific guides, like the "Shield Wall Guide"?

My understanding on this feature is that we must have a dangerous orb (or higher) to use it. Is that the case? If so, does the system use an orb starting at the dangerous level and then go up, until we run out?

Lastly, how can the captain (Shem McKay) receiving the Voodoo Purification skill below be a non-elite (or higher) captain? Thank you.

    Hello there Pirate,

If you are looking to change your active manoeuvre and you have more than one captain with different manoeuvres you can do this by using the commission tab as seen below.

By selecting this option your current commissioned captain with the gunpowder rush manoeuvre will be switched to the lower captain and your now current manoeuvre will be voodoo purification, this is the best way to change manoeuvres without losing any captains or anything else.

If you are wanting to completely change the manoeuvre of a captain then you will have to sacrifice a captain to do so.
This can be done by empowering captains.

By using this method you can select in the top box the captain you want to switch manoeuvre and select a captain with a different manoeuvre as above, and drag the item 'command instructions or perfect command instructions' into the empty box below Vlad Blackbeard and Vlad's manoeuvre will be transferred to Rafael, At a cost of sacrificing Vlad.

The other method is to Sacrifice a lower value captain and change your manoeuvre for a random new one.

This method Will sacrifice captain Barton and replace Rafael's manoeuvre with a new random one (see the manoeuvre handbook in the box below Barton)

The guides you mention "Shield wall guide" etc, in your question have not yet been released as an active item within the game, We will announce officially when this item becomes available and active.
Additionally, on the subject of guides, your question about Shem McKay, This item is a guide, Shem would not receive the skill, It would be passed through him and placed onto Flynn who would receive the skill during empowerment.

Further Information regarding commissioning and captains can be found

I Hope this clears up your query's.

Thank you so much. But do I understand this correctly - any level captain can receive a manoeuvre? I thought only elite-levels could.

And one quick comment, while on the topic - wow, it is overly-difficult to add the tiered-equipment to the very high-level captains (i.e., "epic")! I had a ton of catalysts and equipment, and burned through all of my equipment and most of my catalysts trying to forge epic equipment for my captain, in order to raise his vitality level. He is a captain with some of the best starting values ("Captain Waters", who has "90-95" vitality), but he doesn't have the 700 vitality required to even do the elite-level quests. Is there another way to raise his vitality, without picking another captain to develop? I tried empowering him with lower-level captains, but it does nothing toward raising his vitality.

    Hello there Pirate,

Only Elite and Epic captains can receive manoeuvres, However when using 'guides' (which as stated are not currently available) then manoeuvres can be "channeled" through a lower tier captain and empowered onto an epic or elite captain, The lower tier captain would never receive the manoeuvre.

And yes you are right, obtaining high tier equipment is very difficult, like yourself I have also burned through literally hundreds of items whilst forging to gain such equipment and am still in that process of trying to gain full sets for my elite and epic captains.

The only way to increase vitality is through equipment and increasing the captain to level 10.
Make sure when forging equipment to aim to get the vitality increased as much as possible, Some of mine are between 35-40 % which gives me the opportunity to assign high level missions.

You may or may not be aware that there is a very rare talisman item which gives vitality, keep a look out for those when forging and try and build them up, gaining an epic talisman with vitality will make a big difference to your totals.

Much appreciated! Do you by chance know the name of that vitality talisman you spoke about? <--(That's a really good tip, too).

Neat! At the risk of being a pest, may I ask one more thing regarding all of this? "Vitality" is required to be able to do certain quest levels, shown as "risk" on each quest. "Luck" affects the chance you will get extra bonus items, like 3 days of Queen's Legacy, etc. But what is the value of having a high "Reputation" value?

    Hello there Pirate,

The reputation defines the amount of guaranteed rewards a mission will reward you,
You can check this by for example, choosing a mission that could be completed by 2 different captains that you own,
Choose the mission then switch between the two different captains that could carry that mission out, If one of those captains has a higher reputation then you will see that the guaranteed rewards will increase.

Its useful to know these little tips on how exactly captains work, Many dismiss captains and mission however, I personally find them a valuable asset to my ship.
