Everything depends on three major factors:

1. Are you mixing your Ribs / Ablative Platings with other extensions?
2. Which is more important to you, higher HP / VP or perhaps higher damage prevention?
3. How many extension slots are available on your ship?

Ship Extensions have two values set on them. Absolute and Relative.

Absolute value adds up, and is not affected by the amount of the items you use.

Example:

1 Ablative Plating L5 = 1% Damage Prevention
2 Ablative Plating L5 = 2% Damage Prevention (as 1+1=2)

Relative value depends on the amount of the items used.

Example:

1 Reinforced Rib L6 = 22 % Damage Prevention
1 Reinforced Rib L6 + 1 Lantern L6 = 22% //2 = 11% Damage Prevention (gained from 1 Reinforced Rib L6)

Let's imagine that your ship have 210 Extension slots (as an example), this would allow you to use:

14 Reinforced Ribs L6 which would provide 280,000 extra HP and 280,000 extra VP + 22% Damage Prevention.

The same amount of Extension Slots (210) would allow you to use:

10 Ablative Plating L5 which would increase your HP by 100% and provide you with 10% Damage Prevention.

As you can see in the example shown above, Ribs L6 are much better for Damage Prevention however Ablative Platings L5 would provide more HP (mixing it with Tortuga would provide more than 1 000 000 extra HP).

In my personal opinion you should use Ribs L6 until you can use min. of 23 Ablative Platings L5 or 21 Ablative Platings L6.
